Files that begin with "." are hidden from display by default,
in order to neaten up directory listings configuration files
are often named in this fashion
Options to the ls command will show more
information about the files and reveal hidden ones
% ls -a .
..
.tempfile.swp
PapaRoach--Getting_Away_With_Murder.mp3
NIN--Closer.mp3
The "." and ".." directories are always the current and
parent directories respectively
